How to Make Time for Hobbies After Work

I'll admit it: after a long day at work, all I wanted to do was scroll on my phone, eat dinner, get ready for bed, and watch a little TV.
As a homebody, that routine never really bothered me. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to rest after a busy day. But deep down, I always wanted to explore more hobbies and spend time doing things that brought me joy. I just felt like I didn't have enough time.
Eventually, I realized that I didn't necessarily need more time—I simply needed to be more intentional with the time I already had.
If you've been struggling to make room for hobbies in your schedule, here are a few ways to start.
Start Before You Get Home
Depending on your commute, you may have more opportunities to fit in a hobby than you realize. Instead of waiting until you're home and fully settled, try using small pockets of time throughout the day.
Here are a few simple ideas:
Listen to an audiobook during your commute.
Read a book if you take public transportation.
Stop by a local park or track and take a 10- to 15-minute walk.
Spend a few minutes journaling while sitting in your car before heading inside.
Small moments add up, and hobbies don't always require hours of free time.
Schedule Your Hobby Like an Appointment
It's easy to tell ourselves we'll do something "when we have time," but hobbies often get pushed aside when they're left up to chance.
Instead, try setting aside a specific time each week, such as:
Thirty minutes after dinner
An hour on Saturday morning
Twenty minutes before bed
A dedicated hobby night each week
When you intentionally make space for your hobbies, you're much more likely to follow through.
Keep Your Hobby Easy to Access
The easier it is to start, the more likely you are to do it.
Leave your current book on the coffee table.
Keep your knitting project in a basket beside the couch.
Store your sketchbook somewhere you'll see it.
Keep your gaming setup ready to go.
When your hobbies are visible and accessible, it becomes easier to choose them over endless scrolling or other distractions.
Make It Part of Your Everyday Life
Making time for hobbies after work isn't about finding extra hours in the day. It's about intentionally creating space for the things that make life feel fuller, slower, and more meaningful.
You don't have to do everything all at once. A few minutes a day is enough.
Start small. Stay consistent. Let go of perfection.
And if you're looking for a simple way to stay motivated, my Hobby Tracker was designed to help you celebrate small wins, build consistency, and make the hobbies you love a meaningful part of everyday life.
